At Coastal DBT, we believe DBT is for ALL people. Therefore, we hire therapists who specialize in various populations. If we don’t know about your population, we commit to learn about it!

Sarah Leitner, M.A., LPC

My name is Sarah. I am the Program Director of Coastal DBT, a DBT therapist and a DBT skills trainer. Most importantly, I am intensively trained in DBT by Behavioral Tech Institute, the organization founded by Marsha Linehan. I am also experienced in psychological assessment, including Personality assessment and Intellectual functioning.

While I have seen all kinds of clients from many different populations and with many issues,

  • I have a specialization in applying DBT to those struggling with substance abuse since I have been in recovery since May 16, 2011.

  • I also specialize in applying DBT for Christian clients AND those dealing with church trauma. I also have a little experience in dealing with cults.

I have a Master’s degree as well as extensive doctoral training in Counselor Education and Supervision. The doctoral training has given me many gifts including a competency in psychological and education testing, assessment and treatment planning as well as a high level of exposure to evidence based therapies for adults and adolescents. It has allowed me to develop as a scientist of human behavior through knowledge of the research base in DBT and psychological trauma. Simultaneously it also increased my level of empathy as I worked with disadvantaged populations, including prisoners and those newly released from prison.

I utilize DBT-Prolonged Exposure and/or Eye Movement Desensitization and Re-Processing therapy (EMDR) to process client trauma as is appropriate for the client’s situation.

Currently I am taking intensive training in DBT for children. I am also doing a lot of learning about DBT for eating disorders and OCD. I am currently working towards full certification with the DBT-Linehan Board of certification. This is important because currently only six people in South Carolina have this certification.

I can be reached at Sarah.Leitner@CoastalDBT.com, or at (803)-525-4085.

Emily Budlong, M.A., LPC

I am a DBT therapist and a skills trainer.

Whether you have had many therapists, or are encountering this journey for the first time, ALL are welcome. Within the therapy session, I strive to balance change and acceptance, validation and problem solving, and work with you to build a life worth living. I have specialized training working with the LGBTQ+ Population, and am Kink and Poly-knowledgeable and affirming. In therapy many times it is difficult to share aspects about yourself due to fear or shame of being judged or misunderstood. I pride myself on providing an environment that is open and accepting, and where I welcome feedback on how to best support you.

After reading multiple books and attending some trainings about DBT, completing an internship in DBT, and being a part of the Coastal DBT Consultation Team since January 2024, I am currently in Intensive Training for Dialectical Behavior Therapy through the Behavioral Tech Institute. I have also received training in Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Theory and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. I work with individuals with multiple diagnoses including Borderline Personality Disorder, Anxiety, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, and Posttraumatic Stress Disorder.

So many people in life feel lonely, misunderstood, or like they’re “too much” for those around them. It can be so difficult to be vulnerable and reach out for support, so there is immense strength and vulnerability to reach out for therapeutic services. Everyone deserves and is worthy of support. If there is a way I am able to support you, please don’t hesitate to reach out and schedule an appointment.

I can be reached at Emily@CoastalDBT.com, or at 864-214-5632

  • In short, DBT helps everyone! Even DBT therapists use DBT as it helps them to deal with life, including as a therapist.

Those who need DBT the most are those who experiencing difficulties with emotional regulation, borderline personality disorder, or other conditions, such as depression or anxiety, for whom other treatments have been ineffective.

  • How fast DBT will work depends on the client’s situation. Expect DBT to take around a year for an adult and 6-12 months for an adolescent. Some get done much more quickly and some take longer.
